Levi Romero being arrested. He maintains that he was defending himself against a violent assault by Antifa. He has been released from custody.
The Berkeley PD is facing widespread criticism from both the right and non-violent left over the apparent lack of action Saturday. The police department confiscated poles and other items from pro-Trump demonstrators before they entered the park. However, hundreds of masked far-left thugs were allowed to storm the park armed with bear spray, brass knuckles, rocks, clubs, and other weapons. Numerous conservative activists were injured before attendees finally pushed back and drove the attackers away themselves.
The Berkeley PD allege that 250 officers from both the Berkeley and Oakland police departments were present to maintain order.
Yesterday, The Mercury News claimed that 23 people were arrested, with seven of those charged with felonies. The newspaper then published a completely fake list of the seven people. They simply picked seven random people from a recent arrest log. Many of them were people arrested in Berkeley on Friday, the day before the event. None of the seven people named by the Mercury News were people arrested at the event.
Today the Berkeley PD released a statement saying twenty people were arrested. They withheld the name of one person because he is seventeen. As far as we can tell, the only Trump supporters arrested were Kyle Chapman and Levi Romero. According to the Berkeley PD, Chapman wasn’t even arrested for something that happened Saturday. He was re-arrested for defending himself at a March 4th event.
The other eighteen are presumably all Antifa or other far-left activists. This would represent only a small fraction of the total number of Antifa that engaged in criminal violence.
